What Not To Feed Your Dog

Keep An Eye On Your Pooch

It’s tough for us to not bite here and there during the holidays with all the delicious treats and seasonal food that surrounds us. Can you imagine being a dog? Talk about tempting, and every now and then we’ve got our pets sneaking a bite when it’s close to the table’s edge and they think no one is looking. Cute little buggers! However, it’s not so cute if it’s a food that they shouldn’t be eating and honestly, they don’t know any better but, we should. It’s our responsibility to know and make sure our pets are safe.

What Is Safe For Your Dog To Eat?

Aside from weight gain (which can be harmful as well), there are foods that are a huge no-no for our pets. We put a list together of toxic foods so you can slide that tempting dish away from the edge.

According to the American Kennel Club and ASPCA, here are foods that - no matter the cute begging that is tugging at your heart - these foods are off-limits and are toxic to your dogs:

 Toxic Foods:

  • Nuts

  • Cinnamon

  • Chocolate (very toxic)

  • Garlic

  • Grapes & Raisins

  • Salty Snacks

So-So Foods:

  • Bread (Limit due to canine weight gain which is growing in the US.)

  • Ice cream (This is up for debate because it’s more of a weight issue than a toxic one - unless they are lactose intolerant. Also, be wary of the amount of sugar in the brand. But for 6 years, I know my in-shape pooch loves a soft cone on her birthday. Just use discretion.)

  • Milk (Again, your pet may be lactose intolerant. Use caution.)

  • Cheese (Moderation.)

 Okay Foods:

  • Salmon, Tuna & Shrimp

  • Turkey

  • Wheat & Grains

  • Yogurt (Probiotics are healthy)

  • Popcorn

  • Peanuts & Peanut Butter (raw & unsalted is the best)

  • Pork / Ham (watch for sugars and nitrates)

  • Honey

  • Eggs

Just use discretion on the middle-to-good foods because as we all know, even for ourselves, too much healthy food can add on the pounds. If they are giving you those sappy eyes and pouring on the love, one suggestion is to have their healthy treats hidden in certain areas where the human food is, and when they aren’t trying to sneak a turkey leg off the table, reward them for their willpower…and cuteness.

Happy holidays!
